The sable antelope (Hippotragus niger) is a striking and powerful African antelope known for its glossy coat and majestic, curved horns. Males, or bulls, have a jet-black coat with a contrasting white facial pattern, while females and juveniles tend to have a rich chestnut-brown coloration. Their long, ridged horns can grow up to 65 inches (165 cm) in males, making them one of the most impressive horned antelopes in Africa. Sable antelopes are primarily found in the savannas and woodlands of eastern and southern Africa, particularly in countries like Angola, Zambia, Tanzania, and South Africa. They prefer areas with a mix of open grasslands for grazing and dense woodlands for shelter. These antelopes are highly territorial and live in herds led by a dominant male, defending their groups with aggressive posturing and, if necessary, their powerful horns. Sables are known for their resilience, often standing their ground against predators like lions rather than fleeing.
