The kudu is a large and majestic antelope known for its striking appearance and impressive spiraled horns in males. There are two species: the greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) and the lesser kudu (Tragelaphus imberbis), both native to Africa. Kudus have a sleek, tawny-brown or grayish coat with distinctive white vertical stripes running along their bodies, which help them blend into the dense bush and wooded savannas they inhabit. They are found in eastern and southern Africa, preferring areas with a mix of woodlands, scrublands, and rocky hills where they can browse on leaves, shoots, fruits, and flowers. Kudus are excellent jumpers, capable of clearing heights of over 8 feet (2.5 meters) when escaping predators such as lions, leopards, and wild dogs. Despite their large size, they are shy and elusive, often relying on their natural camouflage and stealth to avoid danger. These graceful antelopes play a crucial role in their ecosystems by controlling vegetation and serving as prey for large predators.
